If a foreign citizen works in Russia and has a valid work permit, which expires soon, it can be renewed without them having to leave the country. This procedure differs from the initial receipt of a work permit: for example, different documents will be required from the employee, and the employer will not need to issue a work invitation and get registered with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
A work visa can be extended only after the extension of a work permit. It is important to start the procedure in advance by leaving enough time for each step. If you do not have time to extend these documents, a foreigner will have to leave Russia and go through the whole procedure again.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs establishes certain deadlines for applying for the renewal of a work permit. If you don’t do it on time, the documents will not be accepted. Extending a work permit for a highly qualified specialist is simpler and faster than for quota and above quota employees. There are no additional requirements and restrictions for the employees, in addition to the standard conditions for obtaining the permit. It is only important to submit the documents on time before the visa has expired.
A work permit for highly qualified specialists can be renewed an unlimited number of times, but for not more than 3 years each time.
Extension terms
The best time for submission of the documents for the renewal of a work permit for highly qualified specialists is 1.5-2 months before the visa expiration. A work permit is issued within 14 working days, and the visa extension procedure takes 20 working days. In addition, by law, the documents for the renewal of a work permit are accepted no later than 30 calendar days before the expiration of the previous permit.

To extend a work permit, a highly qualified specialist needs to submit several additional documents: for example, a 2-NDFL certificate of income for the entire term of the previous permit and a health insurance contract.

Extension terms
Foreign citizens who work in Russia on quota or above quota positions can also extend their work permit without leaving the country. In fact, this procedure is just getting a new work permit. It is necessary to go through all the stages of applying for a job before obtaining a work visa, as in the case of primary employment.
Employees can get a new work permit without leaving Russia, only if two conditions are met: if the employer and the position remain the same.
A new work permit for workers who are not highly qualified specialists is issued for a period not exceeding 1 year.
Extension time
If the foreign citizen is not a highly qualified specialist, it is necessary to begin the extension of a work permit about 4 months before the expiration of the valid documents. So much time is required to go through all the stages of registration again. For example, it will take 1 month for the above quota workers to submit an application to the Employment Centre, another month to receive a permit to employ foreign labour, then 14 working days to apply for the work permit, and 20 days for the extension of the visa. If a foreigner works on a quota, the employer needs to get a quota for the next year in advance.
